Can an allergy to sulfites cause asthma or does it have to be a pre existing condition?
Kelly K asked:
I think (self-diagnosed) I have an allergy or intolerance for sulfites. It started off with hives, then progressed into my throat tightening a bit, now I have asthma like symptoms. I’ve been in perfect lung health my whole life, so I’m wondering if there’s a correlation between sulfites and this onset of asthma.

Is a definite possiblity, see either an allergist or a pulmonologist for an accurate diagnosis.
Owie!
From what you say, you do have that allergy.
Asthma and allergies are very much entangled. While neither indicates the presence of the other, allergies certainly would make the asthma worse.
The next time you see a doctor, make sure you mention the problem.
Good luck!
Contact the Feingold Association.
I believe they list sulfites in their approved food lists. They maybe can help you with this. This could be very dangerous, especially if you do have a real asthma attack w/out an inhaler. Contact your Dr and tell him/her about your symptoms.
